Prayer for Protection of Human Life at its Beginning
God our Father, you lovingly knit us in our mothers’ womb. Grant that each human embryo will be respected as a human being, and not dismissed as a product to be manipulated or destroyed. Grant us the courage and conviction to be your voice for our sisters and brothers at the very earliest stages of their development, and for all defenseless unborn children.Jesus, Divine Healer, foster in those conducting medical research a commitment to finding cures in ways that respect these little ones and all your vulnerable children.
Holy Spirit, grant us the wisdom to develop morally sound treatments for conditions now thought to be incurable. Help us persevere in defending human life while alleviating suffering.
Show mercy to all who have cooperated in killing our tiniest brothers and sisters. Bring them and all who support destructive embryo research to true conversion. Grant them the ability to see the immeasurable dignity of all human beings even in the first days of life.

Education Spotlight
Last weekend, Governor Brewer signed into law a very positive pro-life bill (HB 2416) that would require all women receiving an abortion to have the opportunity to view an ultrasound and hear the heartbeat of their baby at least an hour before the procedure. We are grateful to Governor Brewer for signing this bill which will better serve women and
save the lives of many unborn children.
Earlier this week, another pro-life bill also made progress as HB 2384 was approved by the Senate and sent to the Governor. HB 2384, among other things, would prohibit people from receiving tax credits for donations to organizations providing or referring for abortions and will hopefully become law soon.
Similarly, on Tuesday, a tremendously beneficial bill (HB 2581) moved forward to increase the limits for the individual tuition tax credit program from $500 to $750 for single people and from $1,000 to $1,500 for married couples. HB 2581 would also increase the donor pool for corporations under the corporate tuition tax credit program
and presently awaits action by the Governor.
If you have not already done so, please take a moment and send Governor Brewer a respectful note thanking her for supporting school choice in the past and politely asking that she sign HB 2581 into law. You can send such a message, by going to www.azcatholicconference.org and using our “Action Alert” system.
Finally, before the week ended, it should also be noted that the bill (SB 1188) to provide preference for married couples in adoptions when all other factors are equal, passed the House and is now ready for Senate concurrence.
We expect much more action next week as the Legislature prepares to wrap up all business sometime this month.
ARIZONA CATHOLIC CONFERENCE BISHOPS' STATEMENT OPPOSING THE DEATH PENALTY
At the outset of this statement, we express our compassion for those who are victims of brutal crimes and for their families. The effects of murder, in particular, are truly awful for families, and we pray for the healing of all those who grieve and suffer because of murder.
As Arizona approaches two scheduled executions, we are compelled to
express again our opposition to the use of the death penalty in our state.
We firmly hold that capital punishment is state-sanctioned vengeance that is not in keeping with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We hold that capital punishment – when other means are available to keep society safe from dangerous criminals – denies the intrinsic dignity and sanctity of human life.
The commission of a heinous crime, especially one in which a life has been taken, should result in punishment.
But, the use of the death penalty – when other means are available to keep society safe – is actually a contribution to a “culture of death.” It is an act of eye-for-an-eye vengeance that contradicts the values of our nation and that denies the dignity and sanctity of human life.
Pope John Paul II, an ardent defender of human life on the world stage, articulated that the use of capital punishment should be limited only to extremely rare situations where it is necessary to defend society (Evangelium Vitae, #56).
Executions in our state do not defend anyone, and are therefore wrong.
We, the Catholic Bishops of Arizona, call for an end to the unnecessary
violence of the death penalty.
We pray that the dignity and sanctity of human life at every stage be
respected and protected.

ARKANSAS COMMITTEE OKs BILL TO LICENSE CENTERS USING ABORTION DRUG
An Arkansas legislative committee has approved a bill that would require any medical center giving out the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug to women to be licensed by the state health department. The drug is responsible for the deaths of at least 13 women worldwide and potentially as many as 30 or more, and, according to 2006 FDA figures, has injured at least 1,100 women — requiring everything from hospitalization to blood transfusions.

Miami, FL – Two felony charges were dropped last week against unlicensed abortion clinic worker Belkis Gonzalez, who was accused of taking a baby born alive after an incomplete abortion and stuffing her in a bag.
Doctors who had been scheduled to testify against Gonzalez have changed their opinions, leaving prosecutors without a case.
“Everyone wants to use common sense. There was no common sense involved in this case,” said Ed Griffith, spokesman for the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, this morning, according to Operation Rescue. “We went strictly on the letter of the law. The physicians backed away from the position that she was practicing medicine. We had no prosecutable case.”
Gonzalez was charged in March, 2009, with the unlicensed practice of
medicine and evidence tampering related to the death of Baby Shanice Denise Osbourne in 2006. Osbourne was born alive, moving and gasping for breath at 22 weeks gestation after abortionist Pierre Renelique failed to show up to complete the abortion.
Gonzalez allegedly cut the baby’s umbilical cord, shoved her into a
biohazard bag, then tossed her body on the roof of the clinic to hide her from authorities. A tip led to police finally recovering the body.
The case prompted outrage from the pro-life community and drew a strong response from the Florida legislature; 44 members of the Florida House signed a letter urging Florida State Attorney Katherine Rundle to criminally charge those responsible for Shanice’s death. Nevertheless, it took nearly three years for prosecutors to finally charge Gonzalez, and that was only after public pressure was brought to bear.
“We spoke with both the Hialeah police and the prosecutor’s office in this case numerous times,” said Cheryl Sullenger, Senior Policy Advisor for Operation Rescue, who has been closely following the case, today. “The police indicated to us that they wanted Gonzalez charged with a homicide, but prosecutors dragged their feet every inch of the way.”
Renelique, the abortionist involved in the case, had his Florida medical
license revoked over the incident. Shanice’s mother, Sycloria Williams, has since expressed remorse for the attempted abortion and has filed a civil suit against those responsible.
“There is no fundamental difference between what Gonzalez did to Baby Shanice and what Kermit Gosnell did to babies at his ‘house of horrors’ in Philadelphia,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “The lack of common sense lies with the prosecutor’s office, not with the law.”
Sullenger said that there is “little doubt” that Florida prosecutors did not pursue the case aggressively. “When abortion is involved, it can be very difficult to get justice because of a political climate that seeks to
protect abortionists at any cost. That is beginning to change, but this case illustrates that there is still a long way to go.”

New York, NY - The US Department of State is telling Latin American
delegations to the United Nations that the Vatican has changed its position on a sexual orientation declaration that was just released at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, according to diplomatic sources in New York.
According to these sources, an official in Western Hemisphere Affairs at the US State Department has held a series of meetings with Latin American delegations telling them the Vatican now supports the declaration calling for “sexual orientation and gender identity” to be new categories of non-discrimination in international law. However, a high ranking source at the Holy See says these assertions are false and that the Holy See opposes the declaration being considered in Geneva.
